Campaign themes

2016

Shockley's campaign Facebook page highlighted the following issues:

  • As a legislator I will be your voice for government responsibility and transparency, education, and ensuring a bright future for Wyoming.
  • The first place we can start is by bring more transparency to state spending and making sure we hold government accountable. Facing future declines in state revenue it is important to look for areas where we can carefully trim the budget. Just one example of this is at the University of Wyoming. The legislator has allocated vast amounts of money to facilities, while money to keep professors and teachers in place has been ignored. I know first hand that an education is not about how fancy the classroom is, but rather, the enthusiasm and knowledge of the instructor.
  • One major reason the state's revenue is declining is because federal regulations are detrimental to Wyoming ‘s key industries. As coal, oil and gas have suffered, so has the state's revenue stream. However, there are solutions. While the federal government has been hostile to fossil fuel energy sources, the feds have shown favor to renewable energies. Here in Wyoming we can fight back by looking to generate new revenue from renewable energy sources and level the playing field.
  • Education is another important topic in Wyoming. One thing that I think we could do better as a state is prepare our high school graduates to be more independent. A major concern of mine is emphasizing financial literacy. Being around young people I find many of them lack basic knowledge of how credit cards and checking accounts work, or how credit is established. Currently, as a state we ensure high school graduates leave school knowing how to balance a chemical equation, but hardly mentioning how to balance a checkbook. It is my goal to change this reality.[1]
