Signature gathering for an effort in Josephine County, Oregon, to recall County Commissioner Simon Hare began on December 30, 2015.[1]

Mark Kelsey, a 2016 candidate for the board of commissioners, filed the paperwork to begin the recall effort on December 29, 2015. It was approved by the County Clerk's Office the next day. The recall was initiated after Hare was arrested for drunk driving on December 10.[1] On February 23, Kelsey posted on Facebook to say that they would halt the recall process and wait until after the next commissioner election to pursue it again.[2]

Hare announced in January 2016 that he would not run for re-election in 2018.[3]

Recall supporters

Mark Kelsey said, "Before, the drinking was something to be concerned about. But this was the tipping point," referring to Hare's DUI.[1] Kelsey argued that Hare was no longer a positive representation of the county and said that he believed many people agreed. "[T]he good majority have come to their wits end," he said.[4]

Recall opponents

Jacob Daniels, Hare's attorney, said that Hare had no intention of resigning.[4]

Commissioner Hare’s work on the County Commission speaks for itself. He is a hardworking public servant who intends to fulfill the remainder of his term as a County Commissioner.[5]
