Scott Coogler
L. Scott Coogler was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. He joined the court in 2003 after being nominated by President George W. Bush (R). Coogler was the chief judge from 2020 to 2024. He retired from the court on January 2, 2025.[1][2]
Early life and education
A native of Nantucket, Massachusetts, Coogler graduated from the University of Alabama with his bachelor's degree in 1981 and from the University of Alabama School of Law with his J.D. in 1984.[1]
Military service
Coogler served as a reservist in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1988 to 1991.[1]

Coogler was nominated by President George W. Bush (R) on March 27, 2003, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama vacated by Dean Buttram Jr.
The American Bar Association unanimously rated Coogler qualified for the nomination.[3]
Hearings on Coogler's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on May 7, 2003, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) on May 15, 2003. Coogler was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on May 22, 2003, and he received his commission on May 28, 2003.[1][4]
Coogler became chief judge of the district court in 2020.[1]
Coogler retired on January 2, 2025.[2]
