Candidate Connection

Scott Schmidt participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on May 29, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Scott Schmidt's responses follow below.[3]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1. Get rid of Corruption 2. Get rid of the Gas Bill 3. Audit government agencies for wasteful spending[4][5]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

1. Immigration: the current system allows the government and corporations free reign to exploit people looking for a better life. The broken system needs to be reformed. 2. Criminal Justice: our society has the highest incarcerated population than any nation in the world. We need to evaluate how to minimize recidivism and if the bail system should still be relevant for low level crimes. 3. Fiscal Policy/Propositions: we must hold our government accountable for having a balanced budget and stop allowing representatives to bypass laws created by the proposition process. Taxes: All taxation needs to be revaluated to determine the least regressive approach. Taxing gasoline primarily affects commuters and low income communities, this needs to stop.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[5]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Scott Schmidt answered the following:

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Integrity, Courage, Ambition and Determination[5]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
Integrity, Courage, Ambition and Determination[5]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Being accountable to the voters and making sure you do everything in their best interests. Raising regressive taxation is not in anyone's best interests.[5]
What legacy would you like to leave?
One of reform. Our whole system is clouded with corruption and waste and something needs to be done.[5]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
I was 12 years old when 9/11 happened and I remember thinking why would anyone want to do such a thing? On that day, I believe we all felt different after.[5]
What happened on your most awkward date?
I accidentally smashed my dates finger in a car door.[5]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Thanksgiving. It allows everyone to come together for a meal and not feel pressured to buy gifts for anyone.[5]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Velvet Underground- Venus in Furs[5]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
No, if previous experience was a benefit then we wouldn't have the broken system we have now.[5]
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Have a balanced budget, stop the reckless spending, affordable housing, keeping companies in the state.[5]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
Compromise. The governor needs to stop only funding his ideas and start about caring about the needs of all of us collectively.[5]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Of course. Billionaires, Corporations and lobbyist thrive on the idea of divide and conquer. We need to unite to make sure the needs of all our citizens are met.[5]
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
Not sure[5]
Are you interested in running for a different political office in the future?
I'll wait and see[5]
