Two of the five seats on the Putnam County School District school board were up for by-district primary election on August 30, 2016. District 2 and District 3 incumbents David Buckles and Terry Wright ran for re-election to their respective seats. The challenger for the District 2 seat was Jack Helwig, and the challenger for the District 3 seat was newcomer Sandra Gilyard. Buckles was successful in his bid for another term, while Wright lost the seat to Gilyard.[1]

Putnam County School District serves the county of the same name in northern Florida. The county was home to an estimated 72,023 residents between 2010 and 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[3] The district was the 37th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 11,111 students.[4]

Putnam County underperformed compared to Florida as a whole in terms of higher education attainment from 2010 to 2014.
