Steven Levinson
Steven H. Levinson was an associate justice of the Hawai`i Supreme Court until his retirement in 2009. He was appointed to the position on April 7, 1992 by Democratic Governor John D. Waihee III and served until his retirement on December 31, 2008. Mark Recktenwald succeeded Levinson on the court.
Levinson stated the reason for his retirement as needing some rest after serving on the bench for nearly 20 years. "It got to the point where the prospect of going to work was not a happy prospect," he said.[1]
In October 2016, Levinson was appointed to serve as chairman of the police commission of Honolulu by Mayor Kirk Caldwell.[2]
Education and career
Justice Levinson received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School.
In 1989, Levinson resigned as a partner of the law firm Damon, Key, Bocken, Leong and Kupchak to become a judge on the Circuit Court of the First Judicial Circuit. After three years as a Circuit Court judge, Levinson was appointed to the Hawaii Supreme Court, where he served for nearly 17 years.[1][3]
