The South Dakota lieutenant gubernatorial election of 2010 was held on November 2, 2010. The primary election date was June 8. The deadline for filing nomination papers was March 30.[1]
Dennis Daugaard's gubernatorial bid meant the lt. governorship was an open seat in 2010. Polls were open from 7:00 am until 7:00 pm, local time, on all election days. Voter registration closed on May 24, 2010 for primary balloting and closed on October 4, 2010 for the general election.[2]
South Dakota is among 20 states that uses a single ticket system for gubernatorial and lt. gubernatorial candidates; further, the state holds no distinct primary for the lt, governor's seat, instead having gubernatorial candidates chose their own running mate. Along with sitting Lieutenant Governor Dennis Daugaard, Republican Matthew Michels won the November general election.
