South Dakota Secretary of State makes two new hires
September 12, 2012
PIERRE, South Dakota: Secretary of State Jason Gant announced two new hires on August 16, 2012. The new additions announced will be replacements for both his deputy secretary of state position and the director of elections.[1]
Former elections director Aaron Lorenzen resigned earlier in the day on August 16, 2012, announcing that he would pursue a job in the private sector. According to Gant, Lorenzen "decided this morning to accept a new venture outside of state government."[1] Gant refused to disclose any other details.[1] Lorenzen was hired by Secretary of State Gant in January 2011.
Former five-term retired Minnehaha County Auditor Sue Roust was selected mere hours after Lorenzen's resignation to serve as interim elections director through the November general election. "She comes with a wealth of knowledge," Gant said. "I needed someone immediately, and this was a perfect opportunity for her and I."[1]
The second hire was former South Dakota first lady Patricia Miller who was selected as the new deputy secretary of state. Miller married former Gov. Walter Dale Miller in 1993.[1] Gov. Miller served the state as governor from 1993 to 1995.[2] She is currently president of the South Dakota Historical Society Foundation and worked for the state for more than 20 years. Miller began her position on September 4, 2012.[2]
Miller replaces Pat Powers, who resigned in July soon after senator Stan Adelstein questioned his relationship with Dakota Campaign Store, which sold political merchandise such as mailers.[1][3][4] Gant allegedly told Powers to stop the business in May after it had become a distraction.[1]
