The South Dakota Nuclear Freeze Initiative, also known as Initiative 3, was on the November 6, 1984 ballot in South Dakota as an indirect initiated state statute, where it was defeated. The measure would have required the governor to inform the President of the United States, the two Senators from South Dakota and the one Congressman from South Dakota that the people of the state demanded that the United States enter an agreement with the Soviet Union to not build, test, place or launch nuclear warheads. The governor also would have informed the aforementioned parties that the United States and the Soviet Union should also reduce the numbers of existing nuclear warheads.
