The Rhode Island Commissioner of Education is an appointed executive position in the Rhode Island state government. The commissioner coordinates the policy, legal, communications, community relations and legislative activities of the Rhode Island Department of Education.[1]

Current officeholder

The current Rhode Island Commissioner of Education is Angélica Infante-Green (nonpartisan). Infante-Green assumed office in 2019.

Authority

The Rhode Island Commissioner of Education's powers, term of office, etc. are derived from Title 16, Chapter 60 of the Rhode Island General Laws.

Chapter 60, Section 6:

The council on elementary and secondary education, with the advice and consent of the board of education, shall appoint a commissioner of elementary and secondary education who shall serve at the pleasure of the council on elementary and secondary education, provided that the commissioner's initial engagement by the council shall be for a period of not more than three (3) years.[2]

Duties

As the chief education officer in Rhode Island, the commissioner is responsible for the activities of the state department of education. The core functions of the office require the commissioner to:[3]

  • coordinate and develop education policy
  • manage communications with the general public and policy partners in government, business, and labor
  • support the Board of Regents
  • maintain positive community relations
  • coordinate intergovernmental relations with the governor, state and local elected and appointed officials, the Rhode Island congressional delegation, and the Rhode Island General Assembly
  • coordinate the legal aspects of the department
  • ensure compliance with all civil rights laws and regulations
  • manage strategic planning and budgeting processes
