A special election for the position of Texas House of Representatives District 118 was called for November 3, 2015. A special runoff election was held on January 26, 2016.[8][9] The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was September 2.[10]
The seat was vacant following Joe Farias' (D) resignation on August 10, 2015.[11]
Anthony Alcoser (D), Robert A. Casias (R), Gabe Farias (D), Michael Holdman (R), John Lujan (R) and Tomas Uresti (D) faced off in a special election.[1] Since no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote-getters, Lujan and Uresti, met in a runoff election, which Lujan won.[9][12]
