Etowah City Commissioner Roby Helm faced a recall effort led by local business owner Cat Pate. Pate submitted a petition to the McMinn County Election Commission on November 22, 2017. The commission returned the petition to Pate for rewording to comply with requirements in the city's charter. The petition language required approval by the county election commission before signatures were gathered.[1] On November 27, 2017, Pate told local media that she ended her recall effort.[2]

Recall supporters

Pate initiated the recall effort following Helm's support for relocating city hall staff to a modular building. She accused Helm of making inappropriate comments about her on Facebook and engaging in "unprofessional, unethical, harassing, bullying, and abhorrent behavior." Pate initially filed a $1.2 million defamation lawsuit against Helm, but she withdrew the lawsuit a week after its filing.[1]

Recall opponents

Helm refused a call to resign from office issued by recall supporters in October 2017. He acknowledged that he made inappropriate comments on Facebook and wanted to move on from the incident.[3]
