Two of the five seats on the Putnam County School District school board were up for by-district primary election on August 30, 2016. District 2 and District 3 incumbents David Buckles and Terry Wright ran for re-election to their respective seats. The challenger for the District 2 seat was Jack Helwig, and the challenger for the District 3 seat was newcomer Sandra Gilyard. Buckles was successful in his bid for another term, while Wright lost the seat to Gilyard.[1]


Florida school board elections function differently than elections of this kind in most states. Primary elections for Florida school boards were held on August 30, 2016, though primaries are functionally general elections. A general election was held on November 8, 2016, between the top two vote recipients in any race where no candidate receives the majority of votes. Unopposed elections were canceled and did not appear on the ballot. Special elections were held in conjunction with some general elections to fill vacancies.

The Putnam County School District school board consists of five members elected to four-year terms. Each member is elected to a specific seat. There was a primary election on August 30, 2016.

The filing deadline for school board candidates was June 24, 2016. The county's elections office hosted early voting for the primary election at various locations from August 20, 2016, to August 27, 2016. The early voting window for the general election ran from October 29, 2016, to November 5, 2016. Voters had to register by August 1, 2016, to vote in the primary election and by October 11, 2016, to vote in the general election.[2]

Putnam County School District is located in the county of the same name in northern Florida.

Putnam County School District serves the county of the same name in northern Florida. The county was home to an estimated 72,023 residents between 2010 and 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[11] The district was the 37th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 11,111 students.[12]

Demographics

Putnam County underperformed compared to Florida as a whole in terms of higher education attainment from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 11.6 percent of county residents aged 25 and older had attained a bachelor's degree or higher, compared to 26.8 percent statewide. The median household income for the county was $32,714 compared to $47,212 for the state. County residents lived below poverty level at a rate of 28.5 percent, compared to 16.5 percent for state residents.[11]
