Primary preview: Georgia state executive elections, 2014
May 19, 2014
Atlanta, Georgia: Ten state executive positions are up for election in 2014 in the state of Georgia: governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, state schools superintendent, insurance commissioner, commissioner of agriculture, commissioner of labor and two seats on the public service commission. Going into the 2014 electoral cycle, all ten positions are held by Republicans.
On May 20, voters will nominate candidates from six contested primary fields - three Republican and three Democratic - to send to the November 4 general election.[1]
These contests include Republican primaries for governor, state schools superintendent and public service commissioner, representing district 4, and Democratic primaries for secretary of state, state schools superintendent and insurance commissioner.
Incumbents are seeking re-election in nine of the ten seats. The exception, current Georgia State Superintendent of Schools John Barge (R), is retiring from the office after one term in order to run for governor against GOP incumbent Nathan Deal.[2]
A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate that they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. Georgia utilizes an open primary system, in which registered voters do not have to be members of a party to vote in that party's primary.[3][4]
For information about which offices are nominated via primary election, see this article.
Below, Ballotpedia has put together a preview of those upcoming elections.
In Georgia, polls are open from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Any voter who is waiting in line to vote at 7:00 p.m. will be allowed to vote.[5]
