Ortrie D. Smith is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri serving on senior status. He joined the court in 1995 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton.

Early life and education

A native of Missouri, Smith graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia with his bachelor's degree in 1968 and later graduated from the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Law with his juris doctorate in 1971.[1]

Professional career

Smith spent his entire pre-judicial legal career as a Private practice attorney in the State of Missouri from 1971 to 1995.[1]

Judicial career

Western District of Missouri

On the recommendation of House Democratic Leader, Missouri Congressman Dick Gephardt, Smith was nominated by President Bill Clinton on June 30, 1995 to a seat vacated by Howard Sachs.Smith was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 11, 1995 on a Senate vote and received commission on August 14, 1995.[1] Smith was succeeded in this position by Mary Elizabeth Phillips.
