Nebraska held an election for secretary of state on November 8, 2022. The primary was scheduled for May 10, 2022. The filing deadline for an incumbent was February 15, 2022. The filing deadline for non-incumbent candidates was March 1, 2022. This was one of 27 elections for secretary of state taking place in 2022. Click here for an overview of these races. All but three states have a secretary of state. Although the specific duties and powers of the office vary from state to state, secretaries of state are often responsible for the maintenance of voter rolls and for administering elections. Other common responsibilities include registering businesses, maintaining state records, and certifying official documents. At the time of the 2022 elections, there were 27 Republican secretaries of state and 20 Democratic secretaries of state.

A state government triplex refers to a situation where the governor, attorney general, and secretary of state are all members of the same political party. Heading into the 2022 elections, there were 23 Republican triplexes, 18 Democratic triplexes, and nine divided governments where neither party held triplex control.

Bob Evnen (R)

I support Voter ID, and I have for many years. To me it is just common sense. I support other measures, too, to further secure our elections, and especially early voting.

As a member of the State Board of Pardons, public safety is my number one consideration. Those convicted of a crime ought to be held accountable for their actions. Only then is it right to consider how they have changed their lives.

The Secretary of State has the statutory responsibility to promote international commerce for Nebraska. I will continue my work to expand export opportunities for Nebraska businesses.

I am a Reagan Republican. President Reagan’s conservatism, his political approach, his wit and his wisdom guide my political life. I am a strong proponent of President Reagan’s 11th Commandment: You shall not speak ill of another Republican.

Bob Evnen (R)

To be successful, the Secretary of State must be able to work successfully with a wide range of government and political offices. This includes the Governor, the Legislature and the administration of the Judicial Branch. Experience in government and politics is a great help in performing well the responsibilities of office.

Bob Evnen (R)

Experience as a practicing lawyer helps in all phases of the responsibilities of the office of Secretary of State. By way of examples, he Secretary of State enforces and interprets the Election Act, chairs the Nebraska Real Estate Commission, and negotiates and enforces the contract between the State and Nebraska Interactive, which is a private company providing internet services for state government.
