The New York Commissioner of Education is an appointed state executive position in the New York state government.
The commissioner serves as the chief administrative officer of the Department of Education and the president of the University of the State of New York.[1] The mission of the New York State Education Department is to raise the knowledge, skill, and opportunity of all people in New York.[2]
Current officeholder
The current officeholder is Betty A. Rosa. She was appointed to serve in an interim capacity beginning August 14, 2020.[1] She was appointed by the New York State Board of Regents to a permanent position on February 8, 2021.[3] Rosa succeeded Shannon Tahoe in the position.
Authority
The commissioner of education's authority is derived from Article V, Section 4 of the New York Constitution.

The head of the department of education shall be The Regents of the University of the State of New York, who shall appoint and at pleasure remove a commissioner of education to be the chief administrative officer of the department.[4] |

Duties
The commissioner serves as the chief administrative officer of the Department of Education and the president of the University of the State of New York.[1] Duties of the office include, but are not limited to:
- Enforcing all general and special laws relating to the educational system of the state and executing policies determined by the board of regents;
- Supervising, examining, and inspecting all schools and institutions subject to the department's oversight;
- Establishing and maintaining courses of study for educators;
- Providing the safekeeping of the department and university seal and of the books, records, and property in charge of the regents; and
- Establishing content review committees for standardized test items and assessments;
