The seats of District 2 and District 4 incumbents Gail Cook and Kimberly Fahlgren were originally set to be on the primary ballot, but they were unopposed in their bids for re-election. The election for both their seats was canceled and they were automatically re-elected when the filing deadline passed.[1]

Florida school board elections function differently than elections of this kind in most states. Primary elections for Florida school boards were held on August 30, 2016, though primaries are functionally general elections. A general election was held on November 8, 2016, between the top two vote recipients in any race where no candidate receives the majority of votes. Unopposed elections were canceled and did not appear on the ballot. Special elections were held in conjunction with some general elections to fill vacancies.
