Biography
Representative Brien serves as Public Sector Chair for the ALEC Task Force on Process and Procedures, as well as ALEC State Chair for Rhode Island. Rep. Brien was elected in November 2022 and re-elected in November 2024 as the State Representative from District 49 in Woonsocket and North Smithfield. He previously represented District 50 in the House of Representatives from 2007 to 2012. He is a member of the House Labor Committee, House Oversight Committee, and House State Government and Elections Committee.
During the 2012 session, he was the chief architect of Rhode Island’s Voter ID Law, a bill he championed for several years. The law passed with bipartisan support.
A graduate of the University of Rhode Island, Representative Brien earned his juris doctor from New York Law School in 1997 and a Master of Business Administration degree from Suffolk University in 2001. He is an attorney with Brien Law Group Inc. He served as vice president of the Woonsocket City Council from 2016 to 2020.
