The lure of the California sunshine, the city's aggressive takeover of commercial sex properties in Times Square and the devastating impact of the AIDS epidemic mark the end of an era. With the party of the 1970s winding down, 42nd Street has deteriorated into a hive of uncontrolled violent crime and seedy video stores, making urban renewal seem more unlikely than ever before. Following the interconnected lives of Times Square's barkeeps, prostitutes, pimps, police, mobsters, porn actors and producers, the eight-episode third season of THE DEUCE brings the series' arc to a dramatic conclusion. Oct 29, 2019 | Full Review… Inkoo Kang Slate Top Critic Something, at this point in the show's life, has been lost. There's no charge in the way two people look at each other anymore; no sense of ambition; no motivation, even. Desire has left the Deuce. Sep 12, 2019 | Full Review… Sophie Gilbert The Atlantic Top Critic World-building is a topic that tends to come up with science-fiction sagas or fantasy epics, but "The Deuce" is one of the most impressive examples in recent memory. Sep 9, 2019 | Rating: A- | Full Review… Ben Travers indieWire Top Critic This is rich television that demands you put down your phone and give it your full attention. As a portrait of a time and industry, it is both brilliantly broad and painfully precise. Jan 3, 2020 | Rating: 5/5 | Full Review… Rebecca Nicholson Guardian Top Critic Gyllenhaal with sharp, quiffed hairstyle and big-boss earrings is tough and streetwise, but still tender beneath, as when Eileen reminisces with a co-worker how they each got into the game - the stories aren't nice. Dec 30, 2019 | Rating: 5/5 | Full Review… Suzi Feay Financial Times Top Critic As this episode makes clear though, perhaps the reason all this frustration is starting to bubble over is that nobody with the power to do anything appears to be heeding anyone's cries for help. Sep 11, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review… Chris Osterndorf The Daily Dot In its final season, "The Deuce" leaves the scene with an impressive, bittersweet sense of drama. Sep 11, 2019 | Full Review… Alci Rengifo Entertainment Voice In the end, HBO and the rest of the world at large has once again benefited from handing David Simon and friends a blank check. The Deuce has always had a way of capturing the way life is and the way it should be simultaneously. Sep 9, 2019 | Rating: 5/5 | Full Review… Alec Bojalad Den of Geek This final, lovely season won't gloss over the nasty, cruel, and devastating parts of the sex industry, but it does let us soak in the finely-aged relationships between its note-perfect characters as they're paved over for new hotels. Sep 6, 2019 | Rating: 9.3/10 | Full Review… Jacob Oller Paste Magazine View All Critic Reviews (17) Audience Reviews for The Deuce: Season 3 Apr 01, 2020 The Deuce is smart to make such large time jumps between seasons, and the third and final is much more immediately electrifying than the previous two. It ends strongly and emotionally with the most thematic and unfiltered season overall. The finale wasn't perfect, but it left me with the distinct realization that everyone I've ever met is going to die. Season 3 hones the show's skills and focuses on what it does best: characterization. The best thing about The Deuce has always been how the events surrounding the characters have shaped their decisions and outlook on life. Jack Z Mar 23, 2020 The final season of The Deuce left me bored. However, the finale was extremely sad. Ma'ark T Feb 10, 2020 D.S. has done his research, and creates this homage to this forgotten period. Season 3 gets even more real and dark. giorgos v Dec 23, 2019 Cierre de la serie un poco flojo, los personajes quedan un poco en el aire pero igual conserva su valor. Andres V Nov 16, 2019 oh my gosh its amazing Max K Nov 01, 2019 Amazing show, fantastic characters. Such a shame don't get the recognition they deserved, but I think the series will be remembered and praised in the future. Tiago M Nov 01, 2019 Season 3 is a very clear step down for the Deuce...Abby as a character couldn't be less interesting, there is frequent preaching (and more than a bit from ill-informed angles), storylines are repetitive, and the overall approach has gotten heavy-handed and sloppy. Overall it isn't miserable, but it's very disappointing at best. David W Oct 31, 2019 The Deuce ends very nicely in its final year, and honestly the only criticism might be that there was still more story to tell. Entering the 80s, The Deuce certainly focuses on the detrimental effects of excess, but as with the last two seasons it retains a gracious feminist touch. All the characters are well fleshed out here, although sorely Maggie Gyllenhaal's character of EIleen doesn't quite get the send-off one would hope (the finale hints on a path for her that could have made for an entire other season!). That said, The Deuce's final sequence is rather unforgettable, managing to be both emotional and thematically relevant, and it acts as one of television's grandest love letters to New York City. If not top-tier HBO (I.E. The Wire, The Sopranos, Deadwood), The Deuce is still likely in the top 20%. Peter F Oct 21, 2019 Just couldn't continue watching a series on the beginnings of the porn industry, merchants of sleaze. Pete S Oct 21, 2019 Franco and Maggie are magnificent again in its final season, and its message is still strong even if they have to rush the narrative to conclude with a bang.
