Reasonable movie. The Skeleton Key is trying to trick the viewer into thinking there are horror elements in it, but that's certainly not true. There is absolutely no drama at all. It is a thirteen in a dozen thriller that has a somewhat too long running time. Director Iain Softley failed to make a film that will stick with the viewer a little longer. It's all just a little too little.

Great role by Kate Hudson. She plays a constant role and has convinced me. Gena Rowlands also plays well. She is good in her role and plays with enthusiasm. Admittedly, she plays an interesting character. Unfortunately, John Hurt has very little to say in his role, but that is due to the limitations of his character. I don't understand why they got Hurt for that part, another actor could have done it just as well.

The Skeleton Key has become a bit of a disappointment for me. I had hoped for some scare effects and some horror elements. Fortunately, the film has very few drama elements. I wasn't expecting that for a movie like this one. In any case, the atmosphere is nice. The potential of the film is unfortunately hardly used and the result can (still) be called reasonable.

3*

Done quickly, despite the setting. Big house, steaming bayou and that in New Orleans, Louisiana, where French sounds scary and the horror is in the air. Hoodoo in this case. Couldn't do better for a supernatural horror movie, but Softley rages like an elephant in a china shop. Building a scene in a decent way is not an option, long before it goes wild it is an endless bustle in image and sound. Rattling with tons of noise, whether it's a lot of thunder, music or a sound effect, it goes on and on. With zero sophistication, Softley mutilates his greatest asset. And by that I don't mean a silly twist. That too.

Good old-fashioned thriller that I saw about 15 years ago. This movie just holds up well. Strong plot with a surprising twist, attractively filmed within appropriate sets. More mystery than horror. 3.5 stars from me as there are of course better films within this genre.
