“Could you act human? Okay, I have neighbors.”

Not bad. The story starts (too) slowly and the expected action is disappointing, but there are plenty of good things in return. I've heard horror stories about the acting, but Stewart and Pattinson are not bad and make a strange but interesting duo. Bella and Edward are both emotionless and I think a little out of touch, but together it works wonderfully. The grey, dark and rainy images and locations also help and provide an atmospheric whole. The other actors join in for bacon and beans, and are allowed to look especially grumpy and mysterious.

Funny to read here that so many people who don't actually belong to the target group became curious and I belong to that group. I heard a while back from a macho that he thought it was quite a nice film and that intrigued me anyway. Of course the film contains the expected teenage romance, but it doesn't get too dramatic or emo and it actually remains a fairly light-hearted film that looks good. The soundtrack wasn't my thing and seemed like an excuse to plug in some pop rock songs. I can remember criticism at the time that everything remains so good, no sex, tender kisses, but that may be the charm because Edward is also old-fashioned. I'm certainly not a big fan of Kristen Stewart, but she certainly does a great job in this movie. Then the make-up...well, Bella looks like she's been awake for 3 nights in a freezer, Edward looks like his hair has been blow-dried for 3 days.

When it comes to high school vicissitudes it all comes across as very carefree, no one to be harassed, immediate acceptance and even popularity of Stewart, every boy immediately falls for her .... that's too high Mary Sue quality.

It could easily have been a TV production, a series ala Buffy. Certainly not a film to watch in the cinema or to re-watch more often, but an entertaining little thing. And still better than Near Dark which contains a bit of the reverse story: boy falls in love with vampire girl.

In the first of five Twilight films based on Stephenie Meyer's books, Bella Swan [Kristen Stwart] returns to her hometown of Forks in Washington to move in with her father [Kristen Stwart]. Billy Burke]. Despite her gloomy nature, she makes friends at her new school and sparks fly between her and Edward Cullen [Robert Pattinson], the school hunk whose family is hiding a dark secret. Taylor Lautner briefly shows up as Jacob Black, a friend from Bella's infancy who will play an important role in the later films. This ultra-conservative metaphor for sexuality isn't very exciting, but it turned out to be a springboard for Stewart, Pattinson and Anna Kendrick (as school friend Jessica), who would become top actors of their generation. Rejected by the majority of film lovers, but the (mostly female) teenage fans of the book were enthusiastic about this. Next: Twilight: New Moon.
