This Is Spinal Tap plot

"Prepare to crank those amps up to eleven"

The American comeback tour of the fictional rock band Spinal Tap (touted by fans as the UK's loudest heavy metal band) is the subject of this so-called Rob Reiner docu. Reiner himself introduces the film with a straight face: 'I wanted to capture the images, the sounds, the smells of a hard-working rock group. And I got it. But I got more, much more. But enough chatter, let's boogie.'

You have to be in the mood for it, that much is clear. But I wasn't, and then there's very little left. And yes, the situations are quite funny here and there, but also a bit on the too subtle homeopathic side, and then it's a boring thing if you don't start laughing in advance.

What doesn't help me is that the images seem a bit dull from the 80s. And then those absurd bastards with that dirty long hair, meh. But it must be said, one or two of the songs are quite nice.

Dope Reiner.

After seeing his more recent film Flipped which left a good impression on me, I decided to dig a little deeper into Reiner's career. I've pretty much seen many of his better-known titles and only a few impressed me. Furthermore, I don't think he is very special as a director, and I even think this film is a big miss.

Perhaps the humor has attracted many people and that the portrayal of the world in question is striking, but I can't do much with it. I have little feeling for the environment that is depicted here and it is therefore difficult for me to put myself into it. Besides, I was done with the characters of the film after only 15 minutes. Also think this would have worked much better as a short film. An hour and a half was really quite a task.

It won't take long, but it sure feels that way. Humor that didn't really appeal to me after a while fills the film and as a "documentary" I thought it was absolutely terrible. Of course it's fake, but if this was intended as a documentary in the context of the story then I think it's quite a failure. More random snapshots than a structured whole of a band that isn't quite right in the upper case.

Sometimes still nice and the approach is fun, otherwise a rather tiring event that I couldn't laugh about much. Annoying characters, sometimes a little too easy jokes and never really felt like I was looking at the real world. Several real band members have indicated that they can identify with this film. I don't, so I can't do much with it. Unfortunately.
