The atmosphere and structure are strong, with a good build-up to the excellent climax where it is a bit clumsy that the sheriff does not know that he is actually dead; does he not need to be updated??. Furthermore, it is not very special, the gore is nice but it never gets scary. The cast is quite mediocre and little is done with the setting.

A sympathetic and lesser-known horror from the early 80s. In terms of atmosphere and tone, it is somewhat reminiscent of a John Carpenter like The Fog and also fits in the atmosphere of the Stephen King film adaptations. But Dead & Buried does not really have many big names. The script was written by Ronald Shusett, the writer of Alien, so the film can show off that. The name Dan O'Bannon (the other screenwriter of Alien) is also mentioned, but O'Bannon himself says he has almost nothing to do with this film. The director is Gary Sherman, who previously made the horror Death Line and after this film directed the nice sequel Poltergeist III. But there is a great person involved in the film; none other than legend Stan Winston is responsible for the effects.

Dead & Buried is not a fast, flashy horror, but relies on atmosphere and mystery. The film is built up slowly, with the occasional murder and a few very effective scares. The film is not really scary, but the dark, threatening atmosphere that is created is infectious. The effects are mainly very nice and creative, with the occasional clumsy exception (the man who gets injected with acid is very clearly a doll). The characters are fine and the acting is also satisfactory, with Jack Albertson - the grandfather from Willy Wonka - as the clear main attraction and Robert 'Freddy' Englund also plays a small, funny role. Lead actor Farentino is a bit less, especially towards the end his overacting becomes quite laughable. Nevertheless, Dead & Buried has a strong ending.

3.5 stars.

Villages you better not go to episode 906: Potter's Bluff. In the revision! And immediately promotion to the Eredivisie. Left row. This is a very original story, with good scares, nice atmosphere and nice FX that even made the film end up on the video nasty list. Robert Englund and the mayor/astronaut from Northern Exposure still in small supporting roles. Don't read too much into it, just go in with an open mind.
