Don't Look at the Demon plot

"Inspired by True Banned Ritual"

Jules, someone with psychic abilities, goes with an American television crew to a couple's house. They claim to have experienced unexplained, threatening incidents. As they investigate the mystery, they come across demonic possessions and apparitions that are more terrifying than anything they've ever experienced before. As the cameras roll and people get possessed, Jules and the others seem overwhelmed by this violent supernatural force. If Jules wants to stop the demon before it's too late, she'll have to come to terms with her dark past.

Films about demons that take possession of unsuspecting people. There are plenty of them and they just keep coming out. Usually such films always follow the same principle. Every now and then you are pleasantly surprised. That does not apply to this film, by the way. Don't Look at the Demon may look nice, but it is not a novelty within the subgenre.

There is still a bit of something special. The film is set in Malaysia and integrates some local customs into the story. These are things you don't find in a typical demon movie. Don't expect too much from it. There is not much to see of the country and experiencing the local mysticism is not too bad. You actually notice little of the exotic aspect. Most of the film takes place in a haunted house inhabited by white residents who are helped with their devilish problem by white people. The house might as well be in an American suburb.

The things you expect happen in the house. Possessed people suddenly talk very strangely and things fly through the air. The film crosses off the clichés one by one. The female protagonist is still interesting in itself. She has a tragic history that adds a nice twist at the end of the film. Perhaps a cliché, but at least an interesting cliché.

Don't Look at the Demon is not a great movie. Still, I had quite a bit of fun with all the clichés. It's all put together expertly, the characters can get along with it and I'm a fan of demonic activities in a haunted house. Apparently I'm easily satisfied.
