Fun.

2021 is the year when horror movies take on a lesser quality, I believe a lot of well-known directors have become a bit lazy during the lockdown. However, this gives room to the lesser-known directors or in this case directors who can be in the spotlight again in this way.

Censor is a film in which style is preferred over story, although the first half hour still has a clear line. As the minutes pass, however, the images themselves take over and the finale actually has no story anymore. Fortunately, I'm one of those people who likes to see some style over substance, so I didn't mind at all.

Somehow I think it's a pity that these films are not well appreciated, because as far as I'm concerned they belong to the more creative work. The acting is strong, the style is good and the cinematography is impressive. Sometimes the film loses its grip and the secondary characters are not too interesting, otherwise I have little to complain about this special and small horror film.

It does have some speed issues though. Sometimes the tempo suddenly explodes, so that Censor is not without his tiring parts. Certainly the middle part, when the story slowly starts to fade, has some tougher moments that still take some flow out of the film. As a result, it often does not run smoothly, furthermore this is more than made up for during the final phase.

Censor ends beautifully with a beautiful soundtrack and some great (and overwhelming) colors. This is one of the better works that came out this year. Creative, visually appealing and also quite entertaining. Tough at times, but definitely solid as a whole. Still disappointed in the average, but oh well.

The arrival of Margaret Thatcher as British Prime Minister coincides with the rise of the so-called Video Nasties: cheaply made, sensational, extremely violent horror films that are often sold under the counter. Enid Baines [Niamh Algar] is a censor who watches the original such films on a daily basis to judge which scenes are too gruesome to appear on the legal market. When the newspapers publish the story of a man who killed his family and ate his wife's face, they make a link between this atrocity and a horror movie that Enid reviewed with her colleague Sanderson [Nicholas Burns]. They are reprimanded for that, just when Enid thinks he recognizes her sister Alice in the leading lady [Sophia La Porta] in another horror film by the same producer [Doug Smart], who has been missing since she was 7 . Bailey-Bond convincingly replicates the visual style of the Video Nasties in the video clips Enid watches, while constructing a chilling atmosphere that is enhanced by Algar's subtle playing and leads to an intriguing, unforgettable finale. Very intriguing and very well made.

Mediocre. The tempo is also quite variable which makes it a bit boring at times. The story is a bit vague, especially in terms of background. Bit of a paranoia thriller with some gore here and there. I didn't know the lead actress, she does that quite well. I find it difficult to rate this. It has a few moments that are good, but on the other hand, the movie didn't interest me too much. Style over substance is less my thing, as well as paranoia.
