The critters again sink their teeth into anything and everything in this second film. Gremlin atmosphere, a bit of science fiction nonsense and silly jokes ("Who you gonna call? Critter busters?"). A real B-movie that looks cheap in every way, but nevertheless manages to entertain.

Those who expect a lot of innovation in the sequel to Critters only have to take a look at the poster; literally the same Critter drawing from the first movie, but with the number 2 in its clutches. Critters 2 is unsurprisingly a rerun, featuring the same monsters and a few returning characters, including the kid Brad and the bounty hunters. Sheriff Harv also returns, only this time not played by M. Emmet Walsh. The remaining Critters actors who did not return have not been replaced, they are simply never mentioned.

In terms of tone, debut director Mick Garris adds a few scoops to the first film's underpants fun; Critters 2 is a little less of a horror movie and more of an alien comedy movie. A good dose of slapstick and cartoonish idiocy has been added. Because what do you want when you cast Eddie Deezen. The film has enough witty moments, especially around the little monsters. Also during the climax, when the animals all form one sphere to transport themselves, there is still something fun, but it really doesn't get much fun. Of course the freshness is a bit off now (which is hot, the original was actually already a rip-off), but also in terms of timing and atmosphere it is all just not that strong. The film may be called 'The Main Course', but Critters 2 is actually mainly a dessert. Such a dessert that tastes quite good, but the main course was even better.

3 stars.

Mediocre film in which the alien bounty hunters come back to Earth when it turns out that there are still Critters. The first half has a fairly standard and boring build-up. After that, the film gets a bit more entertaining in a nice, stupid way. The little monsters look nice of course. Furthermore, this is clearly a product of its time.
