Braindead plot
"Some things won't stay down... even after they die."
Lionel (Balme) is at home very under pressure from his mother (Moody). One day, she is bitten by a mutated rat and dies. Unfortunately, she comes back to life as a zombie and makes Lionel's life even more sour than before. She starts killing and in no time Lionel finds himself with a house full of zombies.

Finally seen.
And what a party. The film apparently had to look like a kind of 50s film at the time when color films began to take over the black and white generation. In Wellington a rat-monkey from Sumatra has just been placed in the zoo and when the two lovebirds: The very clumsy shy Lionel and the tough Paquita just discover the animal, Lionel's dominant mother interrupts them. This one is bitten by the rat-monkey, eventually gets sick but remains stubborn... even though it is obvious that things are slowly but surely going wrong with mothers.
Lionel also remains stubborn and tries to take care of his mother at all times... but that doesn't work anymore. Things go from bad to worse when they get visitors, and to top it off... Lionel's friend, because of the lease, finds time for a party....
And then the party really starts. The film had all its ubergore finds, but that only gets worse and before you know it, everything that has to do with human flesh, limbs, blood and entrails is splashing around. I thought that heap of guts that started to take on a life of its own was really fucked up.... and then that lawn mowing scene... DELICIOUS!!!
And yes, if all that wasn't enough... How that mother turned into a naked troll... Bah, bah, bah...
Peter Jackson makes no bones about it. Humor for people with a strong stomach.

Finally a rewatch.
Despite the cheap B-movie look and the often very bad acting and camera work, I admire Jackson's creativity and especially the quality of some prosthetics and practical effects.
It's extremely over the top and never takes itself seriously, but that's why it's incredibly entertaining pulp.
A half point deduction, because a 4 * is again too much of a good thing. I would also like to see a making of, does anyone know if it exists?

Oh man, what remains this top-shelf entertainment, just enough gore? great humour, all wonderfully pulled off the pot, resulting in a masterful cult piece that will always be in my top 10 ever. Bought this on VHS together with Bad Taste and played really crazy, with friends, alone, in the morning, in the evening, at night...just instant happiness?
