Franchise vs movie.

Coincidence or not, in the same week I saw the new Grudge and new Ring movie. One is an American reboot/remake, the other a Japanese spin-off, but it doesn't really matter much. Both series face the same problem: rudderless sequels that bring little news, but also fail to revive the heyday of yesteryear.

Pesce's The Grudge is a film that puts some other touches here and there, but still wants to lean very close to the original. It's just a shame that the film isn't really exciting in the end, it's the selling point of the Japanese Ju-On. The aim is therefore mainly neither fish nor meat, the ultimate goal is not achieved.

But purely as a film itself I still liked this film, especially thanks to the direction of Pesce. It's not exciting, but it's still attractive. Thanks to the eternal rain, decent camera work, a nice soundtrack and nice acting. It does not produce high-quality cinema, but an entertaining film with a few moody scenes in little America.

So it depends on what you expect from this movie. In the end, it would have been much better to make this a non-Grudge film, Pesce as a writer can argue that. As a director, he does okay, but this film is not really striking. Oh, and Shaye doesn't have to repeat her trick anymore, we've really seen that now.

As far as I'm concerned, these franchises will go into the fridge for a longer period of time. Until there is a new approach in which the series can renew itself, until a director comes along who really dares to do something different or until someone can make a full-fledged ode to the originals. This kind of half-hearted knitting just isn't real.

3.0*

Nowadays, in the field of horror/horror 'a lot of junk' is released and it is therefore with a low rating for a film to wait and see what it has to offer.

"The Grudge" didn't disappoint us after reading the reactions, which were not all negative by the way.

The film shows a lot of the same but we still get a bit sick in the stomach when another Japanese looks at us through her dark hair!

In the film, viewers move from the past to the present and vice versa. So the viewer has to keep an eye on the year. We start in Japan where a teacher no longer likes it and wants to go to the US, and then go home. Unfortunately, she takes a curse with her and her home becomes a place that many don't like anymore.

There are a few jump scares, fairly well 'packaged' and a story that also runs reasonably well. We did not find this "Grudge" really creepy, but the film did not disappoint us in its kind. A 6+!

As a big fan of Ju-on and The Grudge, I had this at the top of my list months ago, but I think the rating for this film is very low. And the remake of 'The Ring' was disappointing for me at the time. So with that in mind and the low scores, I went into this one with not too high expectations. But that can also turn out positive, as with this one. I really had fun with this. I just love this genre. Nice atmosphere, good sound and I am also a fan of Lin Shaye, lovely lady. No, I don't understand the bad reviews on either side and I'm very glad I didn't leave this one aside, because of the mass opinion.
