The Birds plot

"...and remember, the next scream you hear may be your own!"

Melanie Daniels is shopping in San Francisco when she meets Mitch Brenner, who is looking for birds as gifts for his sister's birthday. He recognizes Melanie, but pretends to mistake her for an assistant saleswoman. She plays the game. Melanie decides to buy the birds herself and drive to Bodega Bay, where Mitch's sister's birthday party is taking place. There, however, she is attacked by a seagull, which is the start of several attacks by an ever-growing group of birds.

“It's the end of the world!”

Horror film as only Hitchcock can make. The Birds has a calm build-up and the introduction of the various characters takes a long time, but Hitchcock and the actors ensure that it remains interesting. The coastal town as a location for a horror film also works well, and the sound of the birds really gets under your skin at some point. Especially at the end, when the birds try to invade a house, it is a pleasure. Together with Psycho, The Birds is the one and only horror film Hitchcock has made, and the man shows once again that he can do anything.

Finally got a full look.

When I got really interested in film, it was shown on the BBC. That must have been about 20 years ago. Then made an attempt but just dropped off half way through. It was one of my first classic films and such a disappointment that it took years before I wanted to watch an older film again.

I've regretted it in recent years, because I didn't really feel like starting it again. In the meantime I've seen quite a few Hitchcock movies and it's just not my director. Now finally seen The Birds in full and it shows again.

It is known as a horror film, but I think it is mainly a chatty film that never manages to get exciting and mainly shows a lot of uninteresting, talking people. In retrospect, it's also a mystery to me how this managed to stretch to 120 minutes, even though it felt more like 180 minutes.

The characters are absolutely not fascinating, the story is rather laughable and the effects do not convince at all. It is also not surprising that this film did not have the same effect as Jaws, the bird(s) do not know how to frighten for a second.

But that's how I've had all the great Hitchcock films and yet another small trauma from my film past has been erased. Not much has changed in those 20 years.

1.0*

After Psycho it's the next Hitchcock's turn. A film that I saw before, I don't remember what impression the film left behind.

Like Psycho, the film serves itself with a run-up I think; it will! Unfortunately, this build-up takes even longer than the other film, and all the relational bickering and the reason Melanie Mitch knows from doesn't blow my mind. The wait is for the first attack, something that takes almost 50 minutes.

It starts with a few pinpricks and quite a jolt around the dead one. It's the build-up to the attack on the school and later on the village that can be called great and finally gives the film the twist I want to see. Secretly I think I recognize a lot of things in the restaurant, where everyone has their own say, where there is a certain interaction and diversity, something that reminds me very much of Stephen King's The Mist. So is the phenomenon that Melanie is blamed. The later attack on the house and the attempt to get into the car are bizarre and above all psychological.

The hand of the master can of course be recognized in many things, including Hitchcock himself in the beginning of the film with the two dogs. Striking is once again, just like in Psycho, the presence of a female lead. And not exactly frightened, but an independent, self-reliant woman. Besides that, they aren't exactly ugly either. Furthermore, the attacks look really great for that time and work is done well with tension but also the uncertainty and doubt that first dominates the people. To once again mention the chaos in the town, the fact that the fire brigade wants to extinguish a fuel fire with water is taken for granted.

The Birds does not come in Psycho's turn, and that is mainly due to the development of the story and the run-up. Once up, the film captivates more than, despite the mediocre beginning, and The Birds can really be called a good and beautiful film.
