This is a film that is made quite well, especially in terms of atmosphere. This film is somewhat reminiscent of A Nightmare on Elm Street, and also (a tiny bit) Friday The 13th. At least, that's what I think. Maybe this mix could have been better, but here it is quite successful and I have not seen a better one so far. The setting on that island looks fine, grim and deserted. Not a very nice place, as it should be. The denouement is rather weird, but that was also good. A cool/entertaining film from the video nasties.

4.0.

While Wes Craven couldn't sell his script about a dream monster in the early 80s, there was already the surrealistic horror film The Slayer in 1982 with practically the same premise; every time a lady falls asleep, a monster comes and kills her friends. Only in terms of popularity The Slayer didn't win over A Nightmare on Elm Street, this horror is often forgotten.

In terms of concept, The Slayer resembles a true slasher; four friends go on holiday to a deserted island and then everything goes wrong when – after half an hour – the character David disappears. Usually in a horror film, the first murder or disappearance is a reason to shift things into a higher gear, but JS Cardone shifts down several gears and we get to watch people wandering around for half an hour, shouting 'David'. Don't expect Friday the 13th, in which it is ultimately about the murders; The Slayer is more of a psychological thriller that takes its time. Really takes its time. But Cardone comes back very strongly in the finale, when this quest is over. Despite the fact that The Slayer is more arthouse than straightforward slasher, it does come up with a few memorable executions towards the end that many slashers could learn a thing or two from.

3 stars.

Two couples in their thirties go on vacation to a house on a remote island. Wait, whoa, stop. Two couples? So four people in total? And this is a slasher? Then there's not much to slaughter! That's actually the biggest problem with the film. There aren't that many potential victims and the story really isn't much more than something or someone is killing the cast. Nice setting on the island and the actors are a bit better than usual. The film also looks neat. Nice killings too, but maybe they should have brought the whole family along. A civilized slasher for a 40+ audience then.
