Not wrong.

It's not all that original. A group of hikers (although this time they are slightly older than the average beef cattle and you don't get to see the car ride to the hiking spot - shocker!), someone bruises his knee and a forest that serves as a shortcut. And since it's a horror movie, the forest isn't that human-friendly.

In addition to the average horror event, it is also a film about guilt and such, where the story can also be seen in a more symbolic way. It only offers little added value, except for some nice scenes in the forest with the night shop incorporated.

Halfway through, the true nature of this film is gradually revealed, especially in the beginning that results in some nice scenes. The Swedish setting also gives rise to somewhat different myths, but in the end it's just a group of secluded people and a ritual. The monster is still cool, although it is kept a secret for too long for the number of scenes it appears in. Should have been either a little more subtle, or a little more explicit

The film also lets it down a bit at the end. Not that the 4* was ever really in this movie, but it tumbles from a high to a low 3.5* nonetheless. Too long we live on suspense that actually isn't there anymore. It's really scary after introducing the people and then it all goes on a bit too long.

But a nice horror nonetheless. Enough original elements, despite the fact that in the end it still walks very well-known paths. Furthermore, a lot of benefit from setting, beautiful atmosphere and a calm construction. Oh, and a lack of annoying teenagers, of course.

3.5*

Felt mostly like a male counterpart to The Descent to me. Where the women went there into the depths (caves), the men literally went into the heights (Sweden). Both films revolve around a trauma that the group is trying to process and the unresolved issues between them. With blood and mayhem, of course. Because these are mature British men, it's easy to feel more with the group. No tough talk about chicks and alcohol, but more down to earth situations and also realistic reactions to the situation.

After a nasty opening, cinematographically speaking, the film continues well with the nature in which the men find themselves. The moment one enters the woods, the atmosphere of a Blair Witch Project or Evil Dead suddenly appears. Director Bruckner makes good use of tension building and places the special effects effectively: we see things and we see nothing of the things at all.

Towards the climax I was even happy that we got to see something from the god. Great design and the explanation of its presence as part of Swedish/Scandinavian paganism. Could have been even longer in my opinion. Not necessarily scary, but very exciting and at times very gloomy like for example the scene with the screaming draugrs. Highly recommended.

Not bad, though nowhere scary. A British production is a priori better than an American one, and the 4 British sizes keep it straight. A not very original but atmospheric forest film. The deity looked fine by the way, contrary to what some are claiming above. 3*
