I thought it was terrifying when I first saw it. In addition to horror, there are almost Jungian archetypal fear images in it. For those who see them and experience them as such. The strongest I found was the face of a high barn, in which there is a high ceiling floor for something or someone that was not supposed to set foot on earth, must be insulated. From below you can't see what's in that loft, you have to climb a ladder for that. The image of a girl crawling out of the TV is reminiscent of Cronenberg's Videodrome: imaginary and reality merge.

“I think before you die, you see the ring...”

Stays good. I especially appreciate the gloomy atmosphere and the somewhat gray and dark cinematography. The Ring mainly relies on the subcutaneous tension and director Verbinski knows how to handle that.

The search for the origin of the video tape is interesting, and the film has an excellent lead actress with Naomi Watts. And that son of hers (Dorfman) is wonderfully creepy again. The same goes for the very strong Daveigh Chase, who gives Samara shape in a chilling way. The Ring is a film that gets under your skin even when it's reviewed, only to never let go. Just like Samara when you watch the wrong video tape…

A very effective horror film. Modern horror classic is said here and there, and I agree with that. The Ring exudes atmosphere. That greenish color and the constant rain showers create a gloomy feeling. The real horror here is not expressed through in your face jumpscares, but rather through a subcutaneous sense of creepiness. That creepiness is superbly created by the aforementioned gloomy atmosphere, the occasionally very scary images (the girl who comes closer and closer to the television screen and eventually crawls out of it will stay with me for a long time, but also the images from the videotape themselves are pretty grim) and the dark locations. The first hour, when you don't quite know what it's all about (although you never quite get the full picture) is the best, but in fact the (underneath) tension doesn't stop until the credits. Naomi Watts was also strong again of course, what an actress. I thought the ending itself was a bit abrupt, it is clear enough in itself, but a lot of information remains unknown and the far-reaching implications of the ending are not really conveyed by the film. So that didn't leave me completely satisfied.

It is especially nice that this film dares to have quiet moments. Nice long, slow build-up of tension, images of creepy environments, etc. A horror film doesn't always have to be 'busy', you don't just create scary situations through action or jump scares, and Gore Verbinski understands that well here. Too bad the ending wasn't a little stronger.
