Skinamarink plot

"In this house..."

Two children wake up in the middle of the night. They discover that their father has disappeared and that all the windows and doors in their house have disappeared. As they decide to wait for their parents to return, they realize they are not alone, and a voice that sounds like a child's beckons them.

Very experimental low-budget horror film that is so abstract that in comparison Eraserhead by David Lynch appears to be an accessible blockbuster. The entire film is shot in a very ugly style, with barely perceptible, very static shots in which little or nothing happens. What makes the whole thing somewhat bearable are a few creepy moments somewhere halfway through, but before and after that you have to keep going. Alienating and above all strange, but not in an interesting way. Occasionally I was shocked by the bizarre soundtrack, by the way.

The year 2022 was a sometimes unique opportunity for novice horror directors to achieve successful results with films that changed course in terms of approach. The experimental approach within Skinamarink by director Kyle Edward Ball is an example of this, but despite the sometimes uncomfortable moments, this film demands a lot from the viewer. The first three-quarters of an hour consists almost exclusively of noise, furniture, background voices and a floating narrative. It looks attractive, but boredom quickly sets in due to a lack of stimulation. Furthermore, Ball chooses such a slow pace that the threat within the house is hardly worth fearing. The viewer is sometimes put on edge with a few scare moments, but it is especially the last half hour that raises the level. Atmospheric horror images suddenly alternate and the gloomy impression starts to become more and more oppressive, and I also thought the telephone scare moment was extremely well done. It's a shame, because the tension is suddenly built up very skilfully and the visual style starts to become more and more adventurous, but the other structure and introduction are simply too long for the viewer to become somewhat involved in the full story.
