Night of the Comet plot

"They came. They Shopped. They saved the world!"

Two sisters, high school in the early 1980s, wake up one morning under a blood-red sky and realize that the human race has been wiped out. Anyone not protected by steel when the tail of Halley's comet passed was reduced to a pile of red ash. They meet a rebellious Indian and together they try to find help via the broadcasting system at a local radio station. Unfortunately, they attract the attention of a group of scientists who knew about the effects the comet would cause. They were hidden in a steel laboratory underground, but they left the ventilation ducts open. The survivors, who were only partially surrounded by steel, have now become man-eating living dead. The scientists are now trying to find a vaccine, but for that they need the blood of non-infected people.

Crazy 80s movie where you just have to accept the story, there is absolutely no attempt to explain anything or put any logic into it. Why the characters do what they do is a mystery, but it is precisely that nonchalance (including the characters who don't care about anything) that makes it entertaining.

Besides that it looks nice and what is also noticeable is the outdated music, which practically never stops. Which is a plus here by the way

Girls just want to have fun... when the world ends. Eberhardt's brilliant, underrated tongue-in-cheek end-of-the-world film. Outgoing sisters Reggie and Sam flutter through this synthesizer- and epically bad-haired zombie/doomsday hybrid with fine charisma and ensemble. From a time when bad guys still wore cool black sunglasses and shoulder pads were still worn with some seriousness outside of American Football.

Also very sharply written by Eberhardt. The film clearly hints at the political situation of the time (Reagan-era horror), not entirely surprising since horror films and war/political unrest often go hand in hand. With the fear of nuclear war and the ever-present racial tensions, Night of the Comet was/is an important and relevant film. With strong, striking female leads and a latino love interest it clearly stands out. In addition, the light-hearted, playful way in which the apocalyptic theme is dealt with is highly unusual.

So it absolutely shouldn't rely on horror (too bad, but understandable, that those expectations are too high...), but one of the few moments -the zombie cop- nevertheless provides one of the highlights. Fantastic work by the still novice David Miller, whose '84 was exceptionally productive. Worked that year on Dreamscape and Nightmare on Elm Street, among others. Night of the Comet was special because it was his first film that he was allowed to fill in and direct completely himself. Simple, but effective and memorable craftsmanship.

Fortunately, it is increasingly getting the appreciation it deserves among genre fans and the Arrow release is partly to thank for that. Beautiful BR edition that presents the harsh, deserted streets of Los Angeles in the best possible condition. A must see & have.

Somehow the movie title spoke to me. I don't really know what to think of the movie. On Letterboxd it's categorized as apocalyptic horror. Well, all of humanity seemed to have turned to dust, literally. The clothes people were wearing are all that's left. They're strewn along the streets. The sky is threatening and beautifully colorful.

A great 80s vibe especially with the various soundtracks. You wouldn't say it's horror, and to be clear it isn't. I found the plot particularly strange and incoherent. Then you have a few zombies, but then for a long time there aren't any and you're confronted with some trigger-happy cowboys in the mall. It never gets scary, but I found it boring at times. Fortunately the vibe kept me going.

All in all a disappointment, certainly concerning the plot and the idea that it was a horror film, not at all. Too bad.
