This is a very nice movie. It is based on a true story. It is very interesting that the film features a role for magician Harry Houdini who also shows some tricks. There is something magical about Victorian England. Whether the fairies are ultimately real is something everyone has to decide for themselves.

I had seen this once when it came out in the late 90's. At the time the film made a big impression on me, thanks to the nice cast and the beautiful fairy tale story. After that I didn't see FairyTale: A True Story for over 25 years, but last year I saw that the film was released on Blu-ray in Germany under the German title: Fremde Wesen: Zauber Der Elves.

I immediately bought the film and finally rewatched it. A review after so many years can break or strengthen the beautiful memories. With Fairytale it is neither. The viewing experience of 25 years ago has not been equaled, but it remains an entertaining film, which also has few pretensions.

The story is beautifully presented, but otherwise not very special. Although the cast and location are thoroughly British (with the exception of Harvey Keitel), the approach again feels very American. In particular, working towards a 'happy ending' is unfortunately a bit too forced.

But the cast makes up for a lot with top actors such as Peter O'Toole and Harvey Keitel and nice supporting roles from actors such as Tim McInnerny, Bill Nighy, Phoebe Nicholls, Paul McGann and Bob Peck. The two young leading actresses play very naturally and together they can carry the film effortlessly. At the end we see Mel Gibson appear in a small role (his production company Icon Productions was responsible for the production of this film).
