“Alan, please, last time I played this game, it ruined my life.”

childhood sentiment. Jumanji is a fun and crazy adventure with a Robbie Williams at his best and a board game that spirals out of control. Despite the light-hearted atmosphere, there are also some emotional moments in the film and director Joe Johnston certainly does not shy away from the sentiment. But of course it's about the adventurous game Jumanji with the animals and the natural violence that rears its head at every turn. With actors and characters providing the humor and the interplay between Williams, Hunt, Grier, Hyde, Pierce and a young Dunst remains fun. Just like the movie.

Mno.

I found the reboot movies quite entertaining, I had actually never seen the original (completely). As a child I sometimes saw it on TV, but after a few scenes always turned off. It didn't appeal to me then, and it still doesn't now.

The game itself is rather annoying. Cast dice and then the same tune over and over. There isn't much logic or progress in it, it's really just a matter of throwing to get the film full. There is always a new animal or natural phenomenon, which everyone is anxiously waiting for. A bit of playing through could have made the film a lot shorter, a lot more fun too.

Williams is rather annoying in his role, but it is mainly the very mediocre effects that ensure that it is not all that much anymore. A combination of wooden practical effects and outdated CG just doesn't work anymore. Probably just more fun if you've seen this as a kid, I didn't really like it much anymore.

1.5*

Looked up this movie again after the reboot(s). Much more of a family film with two children, a difference with the later films. There was some tension in it I must say, no wonder I used to enjoy this. You can definitely see the difference with recent films that are less concerned with a young audience and desperately grab games while the makers have probably never played a computer game themselves. Jumanji has quite a bit of excitement and adventure. Wonderfully pumped up with the drums of the board game.

It is a film for a younger audience and works with some clichés and sometimes predictable storylines. But the humor, the adventure and the script are pretty good. A nice balance in this movie with characters that are quite interesting. David Alan Grier is delightful as the cop in a thread running through the film.

I can imagine that you will like this more if you saw this as a child. It is therefore intended for a younger audience. But in itself the effects are not that bad considering the time and I can still enjoy this now.
