Nothing wrong with this film, which often made me think of El Laberinto del Fauno. That film was set against the backdrop of the Spanish Civil War. This film with an excellent acting Paola Lara (Estrella) was set against the backdrop of the Mexican drug war. It was actually a constant struggle for the children to survive and it was all very beautifully depicted. Horror, on the other hand, I was not able to detect in this film. For me this was 100% fantasy where the ending was frameable, so beautiful. I thought this dark fairy tale was even more beautiful than the El Laberinto I quoted.

The film has been compared to Pan's Labyrinth by Guillermo del Toro. The man was also a fan of Vuelven and thematically it looks good. But it is mainly the story and the directing style that you recognize. The cinematography is different. Luckily, why would you wait for a copy.

The film focuses on a group of children in Mexico. The Spanish Civil War of Pan's Labyrinth here is a Mexican village ruled by drug gangs. Children who are left alone try to survive. It is the fantasy, the stories and the legends that give them some hope.

The trick of the film is that it is quite realistic. A few times you are woken up from the fantasy world. It seems to be a dark fairytale with the children at the center, but the reality is never gone. The film is not grand, it is not the fantasy that is central. This sometimes makes it look less beautiful, but it is precisely that subtle approach that makes the film so good. Small in simplicity and yet a deep impression. An underrated gem.

Expectations for Vuelven were high. The film is even classified under the horror genre. This goes very far. I can still get into mystery and fantasy. Crime and drama too, because the situation of these street children in the suburbs of a Mexican city is not enviable, but it is real, where they are overshadowed by the drug cartels.

They may have used two less confusing names for El Shine and El Chino, but I didn't quite realize who they were talking about at first. Nice acting from the children who act quite naturally. The atmosphere is indeed dark, especially with that ominous voice and the mystery, but I certainly wouldn't overdo it.

Visually it was nicely done, those bloodlines were original, for example, but apart from the poor situation of the children, I was not very involved with those fantasy elements.
