Oz the Great and Powerful plot

"In Oz, nothing is what it seems."

Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a quirky circus performer engaged in sorcery, is thrown out of the dusty town of Kansas and decides to trade it for the magisterial Land of Oz. Once he arrives, fame and fortune are within reach, until he meets three witches: Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weiz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams). They are not convinced that Oscar is the great wizard he claims to be. His prowess is tested when the Land of Oz and its inhabitants comes under an evil threat. Through ingenious illusions and even a bit of real sorcery, Oscar manages to turn not only into a real wizard but also into a better man. Based on L. Frank Baum's beloved character, the Wizard of Oz.

Nice.

Reasonable prequel to the classic The Wizard of Oz . However, this is not about one of the main characters, but about the twist at the end of the film. This is a nice feature, but could have been done better.

The cast does a reasonable job, although Kunis is not really convincing. Franco clearly enjoys his role as a somewhat arrogant fake magician. Williams is reasonable, but clearly does not deliver her best performance here.

The film has few exciting moments, but manages to captivate the entire running time. Nice acting, visually passable. Raimi has chosen a completely different path since his B-movies.

I actually didn't find this film that appealing visually at all: neither the landscapes nor the architecture nor the colors nor the CGI made this a world that I would like to stay in. And in combination with the boring characters, the predictable plot, the performances that wouldn't splash and the climax that came across as "underwhelming" it made for a film that I can say very little good about. Only James Franco, with his half serious, half ironic approach, kept this prequel alive, although my enjoyment of the part was almost destroyed by the fact that his "love interest" was played by Michelle Williams in a really insufferably biting and stupid way, as if they forgot to mount a set of brains behind her Tjitske Reidinga-like blank appearance. I have seen Judy Garlands The wizard of Oz several times with great pleasure, but this predecessor is not yet allowed to shine the red shoes.

Oz The Great And Powerful is a prequel to the 1939 classic The Wizard Of Oz. As with that film, the opening piece is set in the normal world, filmed in black and white and the film switches to color when James Franco ends up in the land of Oz.

The 1939 original was again based on the famous 1900 children's book “The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz” by American author L. Frank Baum. After the success of the film Alice In Wonderland in 2010, Disney tried to match this with a film of another well-known fairy tale. Costs (budget 200 million dollars) were spared, but the result is anything but impressive. It all looks colorful, but the excess of computer tricks does not benefit the film. It also does not work that not all computer tricks are equally successful.

Director Sam Raimi can't make his mark on this film, as Tim Burton did with Alice In Wonderland. Oz lacks Raimi's typical humor. The story is also not very exciting and the acting is hit and miss. James Franco is still nice as the wizard of Oz and Michelle Williams also impresses as the good witch Glinda. Mila Kunis satisfies as the good witch Theodora, but unfortunately falls through the cracks when she turns into the bad witch and shines quite a lot. That also applies to Rachel Weisz, who is not very convincing as a villain. As a result, the film is not very successful in terms of content and visuals.
