November plot

The inhabitants of a rural village in Estonia have to deal with werewolves, the plague and the devil. However, the main problem for the residents is how to survive the cold, dark winter days. In those days they shrink from nothing and rob each other, but also the devil. One of the villagers is the girl Liina. She is in love with Hans, another boy from the village. But when a German baroness visits the village, Hans suddenly falls madly in love with her.

In the first 3 minutes it is immediately clear that this is going to be a special film and I have to say that it has been a while since I have seen something so special. A mix of fantasy, horror & romance come together beautifully here in a farming village in Estonia, which is also beautifully depicted. A great surprise!

A special film that relies more on atmosphere than on a story. It is a mix of rural customs, dreams, fantasy and magical realism. We see a young girl preparing for her duties as a woman. On All Souls' Day, the dead from the village come to visit to catch up and have something to eat. We see a mechanical monster that is animated so that it can work with its blades. At the castle, the Baltic count and countess take care of the old baroness and valuables disappear from under the shelves in the house. So there is plenty to see. But I missed the real tension, that which brings you to the edge of your seat.

Still a special Estonian film. I didn't really know what to expect, but I was very impressed by the opening scene with the calf. A devilish brood of ironwork that comes to life, called a kratt, acts very boldly here. The farmers weren't really shocked by it. A promising start for more, I thought. However, the film goes in a completely different direction.

Not that strange things don't still happen, a metamorphosis from man to wolf and a devil who wants to make a pact to acquire the soul of the unfortunate person. All very imaginative in a gray dark fairy tale in a dreary setting. Ideal for imaging in black and white. The film succeeds in this with flying colours.

In terms of content, I thought it was a bit too thin. The farmers are starving and the constant search for livelihood is their main concern. But it's actually about a love affair between three people, one of whom is jealous and is in danger of falling out of the boat.
