"The trial that brought down Alcatraz"
1938. Henri Young attempts to escape from prison island Alcatraz, but is caught and forced to spend three years in solitary confinement in appalling conditions. However, the second escaped prisoner who was also arrested managed to make an arrangement and was treated humanely. The day he is finally allowed out of the solitary cell, he grabs a spoon in the dining room and kills the other. The lawyer he is assigned is rookie James Stamphill, who does not want Henri to go to the gas chamber. Instead, he sues Alcatraz for turning a simple thief into a murderer.

A melancholy film about a prisoner who undergoes torture in the dungeons of Alcatraz. A prison film that quickly transitions into a courtroom drama with a Don Quixote fighting public opinion and the judicial system.
Strong story were it not that I have already found many contradictory messages online where almost everything about the film would not correspond to reality. No time nor inclination to do a source search, but the gaps are not the least if even his death, his criminal record, the duration in the dungeon ... tells the most diverse facts.
Nevertheless, and apart from this on a purely cinematic level, an excellent film with a top cast. A top Bacon that once again proves to be a top actor. Strange that, objectively speaking, almost no one sees - or wants to see - that something is definitely wrong with Henry Young. Slater is also doing well and it's always nice to see William H. Macy at work, here as a prosecutor.

Skilled 90s courtroom drama, which, however, has too few details to stand out among the many comparable films from that time. Oldman excels most in such a typical aloof character role.

Murder in the First was for me a film with a not very interesting plot. I found the acting all a bit forced and over the top irritating. Not for me.
