The line between genius and madness is thin.
Because no matter how cleverly this film is put together, the director sometimes goes too far. As a result, the average viewer can no longer follow the story properly. Unnecessary too, because despite the complexity, the message is extremely beautiful but above all simple.
So it's really not that complicated. What stands out most, in addition to the strong plot, are the excellent acting performances and the visual charm of the film. The soundtrack is also wonderful, but maybe a bit too much of a good thing here too. A small recommendation.

The film is packed with separate beautifully made scenes, full of fun ideas from the director. But as a movie, as a whole, I didn't like this. Not in tone (sometimes leaning too much on bland comedy) and not in story. The film really didn't fascinate me at all, and then this film also lasted 2.5 hours. Van Dormael can therefore do things with a camera, but he should also be able to tell a film and he does not succeed. Acting is variable, especially the old man himself I found a bit irritating. Visually still fine and because of all the nice good individual moments not a very bad mark, even though I was bored most of the time. 2.0*.
