Land and Freedom plot

1936. David, a young unemployed Briton, goes to Spain to fight alongside the international brigades against the fascists who threaten the fledgling Spanish republic. Together with the Frenchman Bernard, the American Lawrence and the former IRA fighter Coogan, he ends up in the revolutionary POUM militia, led by Capitan Vidal. But life in the trenches is hard, and the weapons they fight with are inadequate. When David is injured, he ends up in a hospital in Barcelona. Realizing that the POUM militia is fighting a hopeless battle, David joins the professional People's Communist Army, committing treason in the eyes of his girlfriend Blanca.

There are also very good parts in this Loach film, such as that meeting in the village. All the more clever since only the opponents of collectivization and the militarists are actors. The rest are all residents of the village.

The final scene is also beautiful. But it all looked just a little too slick, too made to me. The clothes did not seem worn, hardly any traces of a war could be seen. Everything looked brand new, and of course it was.

As far as I'm concerned, it could have been a lot grittier.

Certainly not an adventurous film about the Spanish Civil War - we wouldn't expect it from Loach either - but a story faithfully based on politically-socially charged historical situations.

While the battle scenes are simply worked out, averse to spectacular effects, there is a special power in the scenes in which the revolutionary militia, with people from all walks of life, try to come to a uniform point of view.

Also strong is the way in which the chaos is clarified, how the insurgent militias and the communists, true to Stalin, ultimately pursue the same goal, but are not completely on the same page, which strengthens the fascist front.

Good film by Ken Loach that underscores the brutality and the confused states and uncertainties of a civil war.

Viva La Revolucion... Loach takes us this time through one long flashback to the Spanish Civil War at the end of the 1930s. In a few minutes the beginning is clearly explained: the landowners and the rich, supported by Franco (the fascists) against the common people, who envisioned a Marxist-inspired state. There is something of ultimate justice hidden in the romance of the revolution, and that is what Loach is so passionate about conveying that it bursts forth vividly from this film like the case for collectivization.

I was actually not really familiar with the international brigades, in which foreign volunteers actively joined the fight. Learned something again. A day without learning is a day wasted.

An interesting, passionate film that, due to its ideological similarities, is actually quite close to The Wind that Shakes the Barley.
