La Dolce Vita plot

"The world’s most talked about movie today!"

Marcello is a columnist describing the 'sweet life' of Rome's high society. In search of juicy gossip and scandal news, he plunges every night into the bustle of Via Veneto, where playboys, movie stars and whores in nightclubs and brothels try to make life a party. But in the nights full of drink and sex, deep tragedy and sadness slumber.

My first Fellini.

A film with a fascinating subject and full of beautiful moments. All this told in a number of stories that seem to be separate from each other, but still play a role in the bigger picture. From the bustling start with the helicopter to the strong end on the beach, it is fun. Marcello is quite interesting to follow despite his bad sides. He has given up on his dream of becoming a serious writer and takes us through lots of decadent parties, sex and lots and lots of boozing. The contrast with some calmer scenes is very nice. The scene of the party in the art lover's apartment is a wonderful moment in between all the hustle and bustle. But the scene where he tries to write quietly on the beach is also very beautiful. One of the most beautiful and iconic moments in the film is of course Anita Ekberg and the fountain. Splendid. Yet there are also lesser moments in the film that let your attention slacken a bit. It did give me the feeling that those three hours might be just a bit too long.

Everything is enhanced by the way everything is filmed. Very nice use of light and black and white. Every shot is a work of art. The stirring music, the noise. Everything is perfect and reflects just the right atmosphere that La Dolce Vita wants to radiate. Acting is also a joy to watch. Everyone is very good, but it is Mastroianni who steals the show and rises above himself.

A very nice introduction to the work of Fellini.

Mediocre film in which a columnist moves among the jet set of Rome. There is no story here and the considerable length also made this a difficult sit. Here and there a nice scene (of which a few are set up quite large). The only thing that somehow captivated me was the main character's relationship with his fiancée. This classic is not for me.
