Komt een Vrouw bij de Dokter plot

"Would you cheat on your partner when they needed you most?"

Stijn loves life and life loves him. He has his own business, a beautiful daughter and the hottest chick in the Western Hemisphere. His Carmen does not need to know that he occasionally enjoys other women. And besides, his heart belongs to Carmen, so who cares. He's on top of the world. He made it. But then; breast cancer. His world collapses. Carmen and Stijn end up on a rollercoaster of hospital in, hospital out, chemotherapy and radiation. But he is there for her. All the time. As terribly difficult as that is. Between the chemo's they act like nothing is wrong.

A Woman Comes to the Doctor

A film saved by Carice van Houten and Barry Atsma, that I would write these words down one day. But it really is true, a Woman Comes to the Doctor is saved by this duo. Because Reinout "Arnie" Oerlemans' directing is so hyperactive and triggers migraines that it gives you a headache. With the pounding music that doesn't really help either.

But Carice is fantastic and Atsma knows how to put down a lost bastard who exchanges his wife with cancer for a younger lady. And then make money from it. Great guy that Kluun...

Film, undoubtedly with supporters and opponents and open to discussion.

Many emotions of different nature with the question of how does the contrast between misery and pleasure work in the main characters.

Above all, the film remains moving at many moments despite the irresponsible way in which, in the given circumstances, pleasure is sought. But that urge for entertainment also hurt.

Anyway, I think it's a strong film, much better than expected with beautiful, varied music and two really wonderful acts by the main characters, especially Carice van Houten.

I found out last night that I had never seen this movie in its entirety. That was about time and I can only say afterwards that it is actually just a good film.

The film tackles two heavy topics, cancer and cheating. In fact, these topics become completely intertwined until one of the two comes to a definitive end.
Carmen, played by Carice van Houten, gets breast cancer, Stijn, played by Barry Atsma, can't keep his hands off other women and even when his wife is ill, he still has to take a few slippers.

I haven't read the book, so I don't know if Oerlemans stayed close to the original. He does keep up the momentum but does not forget to develop the chemistry between Stijn and Carmen. The only drawback due to the fairly high tempo is that, for example, the character of Anna Drijver remains as flat as a dime. The highlights of the film are really the scenes between Stijn and Carmen with the occasional daughter there.
The goodbye is very impressive and comes across very convincing.
Atsma and van Houten are both on the move and that just makes for a great film.
3.5*
