Good movie in which a spaceship lands in an elderly man's backyard. An unusual film about an alien being. And that is mainly due to the light-hearted and sometimes even charming tone. Beautiful characters and also nice that the alien does not contain CGI. Partly due to the short playing time, it is easy to watch.

If you combine 'Chimeras' (1984) with 'ET (1982). With 'Jules' (2023), a crazy indie film about the demented Milton (Ben Kingsley) and his wonderful experiences when an alien suddenly crashes in his backyard. When no one wants to believe Milton, he decides to simply accept the bizarre situation as it is. Because why would you want to convince others if they are no longer willing to believe in your reality? A bit tender and full of dryly funny senior moments when Milton, who takes himself too seriously, tries to convince others that he is right. Wonderful character too, played by a completely unrecognizable Ben Kingsley. 'Jules' (2023) falls a little too safely within the lines of similar SF films, but fortunately the bittersweet final conclusion leaves enough room for your own interpretation.

(By the way, I can also take myself a little less seriously. I was watching 'Jules' (2023) on an airplane entertainment system and suddenly the voices were distorted as if people were in a fishbowl. My first thought: 'This symbolizes the alienation of Milton who Since the alien was found, he has become an outsider in his familiar environment. They no longer understand them and he no longer understands them.' to be annoyed: 'Would this continue for the entire movie!? How annoying!' I decided to give my headset a few taps and the sound went back to normal.)

Marc Turttetaub tells a story with Jules that, despite the exciting alien theme, is told in a remarkably down-to-earth and relaxed manner. The film starts as a tragicomic character study about a lonely man. A widower. His name is Milton. He exhibits some strange behavior but is otherwise innocent. Milton has been living alone for years and is considered the quirky village idiot. Nobody takes him very seriously. Of course, it is Milton who finds a spaceship in his garden. Nobody believes him.

Ben Kingsley is Milton. He plays him well. Quiet, a bit confused, quite stubborn but also with a certain charm that makes the character sympathetic. The relationship with his children is difficult. It is therefore touching to see how Milton, with some distrust, very carefully and clumsily begins to care for the alien guest. Humor and (mild) tragedy alternate. Besides Kingsley, there are roles for Harriet Sansom Harris and Jane Curtain. Two old hands who play two very nice roles and with the tragicomic interpretation of their characters are a nice addition to the character of Milton.

The heartwarming film meanders along quietly without major events and is emotional at times without taking the extremely sentimental path. The touching and funny moments are not celebrated exuberantly. It remains modest and that is nice. Jules is a sympathetic film.
