This one had been on my list for a long time and today it was finally time. Because of all the positive messages/reviews I had high expectations (also because I love the genre) and Il Grande Silenzio did not disappoint.

First of all, there are the beautiful, snowy outdoor shots, mostly shot in the Dolomites in the vicinity of Cortina d'Ampezzo and San Cassiano (South Tyrol), which give this western an extra dimension.

Unfortunately, the soundtrack by Ennio Morricone, as noted earlier on this page, lags slightly behind. Only at the end when Loco and his men drive towards Snow Hill does it impress. Not that the score is bad but for Morricone's doing something ordinary , especially if you compare him with the toppers of Sergio Leone or for example Navajo Joe.

What did impress was the story, which was certainly hard and (partly due to the setting and the remarkable ending) original for that time. An amiable villain like him. In his wake, Jean-Louis Trintignant, not to mention Frank Wolff, also put in excellent performances.

However, the film did have some minor flaws, such as in the beginning when the trio first arrived in Snow Hill by stagecoach. In the scene with Loco and the sheriff there was heavy snowfall and at Silenzio a little further it was dry. take the class off the movie.

It is a pity that I had to make do with a German dubbed version, that spoils the fun a bit. Would have liked to see this on an even bigger screen and with the original audio track.

But the latter does not detract from Il Grande Silenzio's status as a classic and influential western.

Very good.

The spaghetti western turned out to be the exclusive right of Leone or directors who wanted to emulate him. Of course, Sergio Corbucci is one of the exceptions who previously made a classic with Django. Here too he sets his own style. Ok, the music of Morricone and the taciturn protoganist are recognizable. But in terms of style, it certainly has its own thing. Characters are even more developed and beautiful shots in the snow.

The remarkable thing about the film is that just about everything happened 'according to the law'. You can ask questions about many things of course, but all the characters try to stay within the law. That makes it so interesting, of course, and certainly makes you think after the film. Strong ending by the way. It stays good until the end.

Good film in which a group of bounty hunters hunts an innocent group of people. The snowy landscape, which is unusual for a spaghetti western, produces some beautiful pictures. The music of Ennio Morricone completes the overall picture nicely. Still just 3.5 stars despite the fact that apart from the ending the film as a whole is somewhat standard.
