At one point I was okay with it.

But it didn't last long, and it wasn't a trip.

I like minimalist cinema, but I expect an intriguing plot that sticks. That is not the case here. Mainly or purely (I don't remember) shot with a fixed camera. Beautiful images, that unity with nature, with the trees and the mosses growing around them in the industrialized environment of Vilvoorde, a suburb of Brussels that is fragmented by various highways and train tracks. Not the place to be for a nice outing.

The plot is simple. A Romanian single man plans and prepares to visit his mother in Romania. His biggest concern seems to be emptying his full fridge by making soup from the vegetables and then distributing it. That's how he meets the beautiful Chinese lady Shuxiu. They get to know each other slowly and steadily, as the film progresses, with few words and rather clumsily. Before it really gets off the ground, the credits are already there.

The film is very slow, banal and therefore 'boring', although the message of the film is that we only experience it that way because we ignore everything and we distance ourselves from everything by means of (rational) naming and (scientific) categorizing everything instead of being (mystically) absorbed in the things around us and in the whole. The metaphor the film uses is the moss: it is everywhere - just as migrant workers are everywhere (with the train as a metaphor for migration) - but we are not aware of it because we look over it. If we do look, we will discover a complete mini-forest or mini-ecosystem in a piece of moss, just as this film aims to show a complete mini-society in the unseen life of the Romanian migrant worker. And (if I extend the idea of the film) moss is ancient and will survive us, just as the migrant worker is both the person of the past and the future, where we always take root elsewhere and thus create a new home. And just as civilization alienates us from nature and others (it prevents the flow and absorption of things), the Romanian migrant worker and the Chinese moss expert discover a deep preface connection with each other (with the sharing of soup as a metaphor), [spoiler ]where you forget the other person's name (which naming creates distance), which is the core of (charity) love.

In this way the film is boring (banal) and interesting (profound) at the same time and therefore gives a better feeling after watching it (which makes giving a grade somewhat difficult).
