Habemus Papam plot

Habemus Papam or 'We have a Pope' are the words used to announce that the Conclave has elected a new Pope. After the death of the Pope, the Conclave withdraws to elect a new Pope. Several rounds of voting are required before white smoke appears. Ultimately, a successor is elected. But the faithful who flocked en masse to St. Peter's Square wait in vain for the appearance of the new Church Father. After all, the latter does not seem ready for the heavy responsibility that the new position entails. Fear? Depression? Afraid he won't be able to handle it? The whole world is soon to fall prey to unrest as the Vatican searches frantically for a solution to avert the crisis…

Piccoli is charming and gives this film something special. A big disadvantage, however, is that the film has hardly anything to offer. The absurd antics with the residents of the Vatican were funny, but after a while Nanni Moretti in particular became bloody annoying. In short, it is a nice fact with an excellent Piccoli, but otherwise the film has nothing to offer.

Mediocre.

Comedy about the Vatican with a serious note when it comes to a possible new approach to the Church.

Michel Piccoli, in his old age, is excellent as the pope struggling with inner problems, and in the end the thought remains that such a film about a church leader is quite possible. Good thing, too.

Usually the humor is successful, there are good ideas, but sometimes too long-winded scenes.

Imagine experiencing this in real life. It must have been on Nanni Moretti's mind, otherwise he wouldn't have turned it into a parody. It is precisely in such tight protocol structures that you can put the best humor just because the predictability and scenarios can go in the trash. Absurd realism. However, Moretti only partially succeeds in his assignment.

It is certainly not Michel Piccoli's fault. He perfectly fulfills his role as an elected Father of the Church who becomes doubtful or panicked when he sees the heavy duty and burdens of his office reflected. Although Moretti could have gone into that a bit more deeply. The character of the new Pope could have received more depth from the how and why. His flight from the Vatican was good. His contacts with the common man in the street and what is going on among the people as well, but too little was done with that.

Instead we get an absurd volleyball tournament, cardinals walking around like headless chickens, a psychoanalyst who is annoying and also a pope who seems lost. I would have expected blessed, soothing, warm and inspiring words from those men, but it was not.
