Reasonable film about a young Afghan woman who lives and works in America as an immigrant. A rather dry portrait (the mainly static camera work and acting also contribute to this). The dryly funny interactions between the characters are fun here and there, but it does get long-winded.

The film is somewhat similar to Sometimes I Think about Dying (Film, 2023) which is also now showing in Dutch cinemas: in both cases it is a black comedy about a young woman who carefully follows the path of love. In this case, it concerns an Afghan immigrant who was fortunate enough to be able to leave the country as a translator for the American army just in time when the Taliban seized power and who leads a normal life in America with contacts with colleagues at work, among others. , her Afghan neighbors and a psychiatrist, but precisely because of that normal life she still misses a piece of happiness: a boyfriend. She works in a fortune cookie factory where at a certain point she is allowed to come up with the spells, which inspires her psychiatrist to come up with a number of new lucky spells, including 'A ship is safe in the harbor, but that is not what a ship is made for'. which probably inspires her to take a daring action to find love. Unlike the main character in Sometimes I Think about Dying, she is not so much an introvert - although she speaks very little, which gives the film an introverted character, which is reinforced by the black and white images - but it is more about trust that, just like with internet dating, case, there is a risk of being cheated, which makes true a saying she came up with herself: the happiness you seek is in another fortune cookie.

All in all, it is a calm film that is like fortune cookies about finding happiness and is full of life lessons and is never overwhelming but is well put together.

PS;. I don't know what it is with the stated durations of the films lately, but with this film you will also find a different duration everywhere; In any case, it lasts shorter than the 98 minutes stated here.

Yes, great film and right up my alley. A slice of life in pleasant black and white and no grand stories but real people. Highlights are the scenes with the car mechanic. The newcomer Anaita Wali Zada in particular is endlessly fascinating to watch. A very nice, sweet, soft appearance, but also with a huge wall around her where emotion doesn't really seem to penetrate. When the doctor tells a whole story with all kinds of meaning, she only asks what the word 'decimate' means, a word that doctor used in his long story. What is it? PTSD as the doctor thinks? Or someone who is just very introverted with a certain apathy? But this film is more a character sketch in which something is shown than that the filmmaker actually wants to analyze someone.

In terms of theme and style, the film was vaguely reminiscent of the exceptionally beautiful Here (Film, 2023) , although it is slightly better ( although rounded the score is the same). Occasionally the pace could have been a little better, but rounded up to 4.0*.
